Wildlife and Nature

The PhotosbyKev website was created to house the large collection of bird, nature and wildlife photographs captured by photographer Kevin Lewis. Kevin is always looking for the next photographic challenge and is prepared to spend as long as necessary in order to achieve the best wildlife and nature photograph possible.

At all times Kevin Lewis has placed the welfare of the wildlife and nature first and where possible the photographs are taken without any disturbance to the wildlife or the environment.

The bird, nature and wildlife photographs stored on the PhotosbyKev website are freely available to educational, conservational and environmental groups and high resolution digital files and prints are available for commercial, stock and private use.

Ballistic photography is always going to be a challenge but it is possible to get good images of air rifle pellets in flight.

I have started developing an Air Rifle Pellet Photobase, which is attracting a lot of attention from shooters and the pellet manufacturers.

    Hello Kevin,

Great work! I am using a Canon 7D with a 580EX and a 580EX II and would like to know the best settings for the Stop Shot settings with the optional water droplet solenoid relay, connections and camera lag compensation.
The 7D camera is set to mirror lock up, manual exposure 1/250 sec at f16 manual focus. The 580EX II is connected to the Stop Shot directly but the 580 EX cannot due to a lack of the terminal. I am thinking of triggering this using the slave mode setting via wireless. The water droplet height is set to 2 feet. I would like to do water droplets and then move on to ballistics for a baloon using the IR sensors. Thanks for your help.

      Hi,

the basic stopshot settings are in the manual for the unit for using the Cognisys stopshot as I use a solenoid valve supplied in the UK which has different characteristics. From about two feet the delay between droplets should be around 60-70ms for a collision, start with 60ms if you don’t see an impact gradually increase the delay value by 2ms at a time and eventually you should see the second droplet appear in the frame. I tend to shoot without lifting the mirror and the shutter is set to 1/10 second. I haven’t found any real quality benefit with mirror lockup except when you need a faster response from the camera after triggering. You might find that the delay in the wireless signal will introduce a second image which will degrade the final impact and as you want to move onto ballistics I would strongly recommend getting a hotshoe adaptor for the 580Ex so you can wire that directly to the stopshot and eliminate any issues with synchronisation. It is also possible to fit a 3.5mm jack socket into the 580Ex foot which I’ve done, a Google search will find the modification for you.

    Kevin

An outstanding job on the air rifle pellet database.

I was in the UK in the mid 80’s, (for approximately 2 years), and had an air rifle built by “Airmasters of Luton” (I have no idea if they are still around, but the HW80 air rifle they built still is.)

Unfortunately, here in Wyoming (USA) air rifles are not as popular as they may be in the UK, and information on their ammunition is certainly scarce. A visit to Google UK, and a search for “air rifle pellets” got me to your amazing web-site, and helped me find the pellets I loved shooting while in England.

Again… An outstanding database, (and some fairly impressive photography as well,) and a great overall web site.

Thank you for taking the time to comment, the database is still being built I have a lot of 0.177 pellets to photograph and add before it will be up to date.

    Hi Kev,

It’s been good reading through your site over the last few weeks. You’ve given me a few ideas & challenges for the year ahead :-)

I’ve tried to download your image processing tutorial, but only get a blank screen. Any chance you might re-post it or send it to me please?

    Cheers
    Tony

Hey Kev, awesome blog :) .

I decided to make one of my own and I’m just curious how you got your “random images” widget up. I figure it’s something in disguise like flickr but not quite sure what :p.
